About This Spot

Step inside La Superior, and you immediately sense a blend of community warmth and quiet bustle unique to neighborhood markets that have grown beloved over time. The aisles invite you to wander slowly, with baskets gently filling up as you explore shelves stocked with familiar staples alongside treasures waiting to surprise you. The hum of conversation mingles with the soft clatter from the bakery, where fresh aromas draw you closer, and the energy feels unhurried but engaged — a place where locals pause to reconnect over shared tastes and everyday rituals.

More than just a grocery store, La Superior quietly holds the rhythm of everyday life for many who value authentic flavors and the comfort of well-curated ingredients. The back unfolds into an informal café space, modest but lively, where the clinking of plates and the murmur of friendly exchanges create a sense of place as much as the food itself. Here, the experience moves beyond shopping to a human moment — a quick breakfast, the chance to savor a homemade tamale, or simply a spot to rest with a cup of herbal tea thoughtfully sourced for both tradition and well-being.

This is a spot that knows its community well, where the familiar is honored and the promise of home-cooked meals is palpable in every corner. The friendly faces behind the counter, the neatly arranged chiles and masa, and the well-loved bolillo rolls all tell a story of care, cultural pride, and everyday joy. La Superior offers a quietly rich invitation: come for the groceries, stay for the small discoveries, and bring a bit of joy back with you.

When I'm in the mood for traditional hispanic food this is my go to place..they have a great assortment of grocery items and fresh cooked items. Let's not forget the bakery! I load up on the cookies..they are my fave! They also have a great selection of herbal teas at very reasonable prices. Go check them out!

La Superior, is indeed a superior grocery store in Durham area, with wide choices of groceries, meat, bread and delicious Mexican food. Its authentic menu is superb to taste and enjoy. This is one of my favorites in this area. People are also friendly and hospitable.

Some prices are higher at different with other supermarkets but here you can find natural orange juice!!! (recién exprimido) bolillo suavecito and sopes! Also there are tortillas, cheeses, fruits and veggies. There is a restaurant with a lot of options, I have tried just tamales and they are really good!

We went to La Superior to pick up supplies for tamales. We picked up masa, lard, roasted dried chiles, corn husks and everything else we needed for tamales. The staff was friendly and the shelves were well stocked. Great little store and they have a small cafe in the back for tacos, breakfast, Mexican pastries, etc. Overall, recommended!

When I picked this place I didn't realize it was a grocery store with a kitchen in the back and I admit I was skeptical at first. You have to wind your way through some isles and a bakery area and then the room opens up. It's full of tables and chairs that have seen better days. On the wall which houses the ordering counter and a window to the kitchen, you will find a smattering of laminated papers touting the daily specials. There is also a screen that cycles through the menu and pictures of various items. The lady working the counter spoke no English and couldn't figure our request for diet coke. After some vigorous gesticulations we managed to get everything sorted. She told us our number and we set down. After about 10 minutes our food came out. The meat was delicious and flavorful. The guac was awesome. The rice and beans were okay. My friend got a burrito the size of a baby's arm. This was also pretty good, but she said she will try something more exciting next time. TL;DR you should try do the thing.

My husband and I commute an hour to visit La Superior. Their menudo was far from small, it had plenty of tripe and flavor. Great for a Sunday cure. I also highly recommend their aguas frescas along with their carne asada dish. You won’t regret it.

The food, the agua frescas, the bakery, the atmosphere.... I LOVE THIS PLACE. This is easily the best Mexican food and market in North Carolina. We go on lunch dates here and get a little of everything, it's so delicious and well priced. Highly recommend this spot!
